KEILLOR

at Boulder

In Lake Wobegon Summer
1956
(Viking, $24.95), GARRISON KEILLOR returns to
Lake Wobegon, where the women are strong, the men
are good looking, and all the children are above
average. He is at his funny best, brilliantly
capturing a newly minted post-war America, and
delivering an unforgettable comedy about an
unforgettable kid, fourteen-year-old Gary, who
receives an Underwood typewriter and starts to
become a writer, producing fantastic tales about
talking dogs, fatal blood diseases, tornadoes,
and the lady with the torch, while coming of age
in the rural Midwest. In that kid, we recognize
the hardest and the best aspects of youth, the
fascination and fear of bodily functions, and our
own first loves.
