BOULDER BOOK STORE READING GROUP
Tuesday, January 11, 7:30 p.m.

Come down and join the Boulder Book Store's reading group, "Boulder Reads Together," as we discuss American Woman (Perennial, $13.95) by Susan Choi. A thought-provoking meditation on themes of race, identity, and class, a droll send-up of the self-anointed morally superior, and a flawless character study, American Woman explores the psychology of several young radicals, the intensity of their isolated existence, and the paranoia and fear that undermine their ideals.

MEG CABOT
Monday, January 17, 7:30 p.m.

In MEG CABOT's new novel Every Boy's Got One (Avon, $12.95), cartoonist Jane Harris is delighted by the prospect of her first-ever trip to Europe. But it's hate at first sight for Jane and Cal Langdon, and neither is too happy at the prospect of sharing a villa. But when Holly and Mark's wedding plans hit a major snag that only Jane and Cal can repair, the two find themselves putting aside their dislike for one another in order to get their best friends on the road to wedded bliss.

FRED ANDERSON
Tuesday, January 18, 7:30 p.m.

Americans often think of their nation’s history as a movement toward ever-greater democracy, equality, and freedom. Wars in this story are understood both as necessary to defend those values and as exceptions to the rule of peaceful progress. In The Dominion of War (Viking, $27.95), historians FRED ANDERSON and Andrew Cayton boldly reinterpret the development of the United States, arguing instead that war has played a leading role in shaping North America.

ROBYN GRIGGS LAWRENCE
Tuesday, January 25, 7:30 p.m.

What is wabi-sabi? Simply put, wabi-sabi is the marriage of the Japanese wabi, meaning humble, and sabi, which connotes beauty in the natural progression of time. Together, the phrase invites us to set aside our pursuit of perfection and learn to appreciate the simple, unaffected beauty of things as they are. In The Wabi-Sabi House (Clarkson Potter, $25.00), ROBYN GRIGGS LAWRENCE lays the foundation for transforming any home into a nurturing retreat from a hectic world.

MARIANNE WILLIAMSON
Wednesday, January 26, 7:30 p.m.

In the honest and uplifting The Gift of Change (HarperSanFrancisco, $21.95), bestselling author MARIANNE WILLIAMSON delves deeply into the powerful role of change in our lives today. Far from being something to fear and avoid, she says, every change -- even the most difficult and painful -- gives us an opportunity to receive the miraculous gift of personal transformation. The only real failure in life, she observes, is the failure to grow from what we go through.

MARK EPSTEIN
Thursday, January 27, 7:30 p.m.

Bringing wisdom to a compelling topic, MARK EPSTEIN shows how desire can be a teacher in its own right, helping us to reconcile our conflicting thoughts about it from both a Buddhist and a psychological point of view. An enlightening tapestry of psychotherapeutic practice, case studies, Buddhist insight, and narratives as diverse as the Ramayana and Sufi parables, Open to Desire (Gotham, $25.00) brings a new perspective to humanity’s most paradoxical emotion.

PAM HOUSTON
Friday, January 28, 7:30 p.m.

From PAM HOUSTON, bestselling author of Cowboys Are My Weakness, comes Sight Hound (Norton, $23.95), a very special love story between a woman and her dog, Dante—a wolfhound who teaches "his human" that love is stronger than fear. Dante is the catalyst for change in other characters as well, and they step forward with their narratives. Here, dogs and humans are simply equal creatures, looking to connect and holding on for dear life when they do.
