JEFF LONG

Enter the territory of JEFF LONG, where the unknown is deeply present, death is a constant shadow, and the human spirit is our final hope. Now comes The Reckoning (Atria, $25.00), another superbly original thriller—a story of predation, betrayal, and resurrection that is at once intricate, haunting, and terrifying. Based on Mahatma Gandhi's eternal philosophy, "Be the change you wish to see in the world," Choose Peace & Happiness (Red Wheel, $16.95) by SUSYN REEVE offers weekly practices, ideas, and suggestions for how you can become happier and more peaceful as an individual and in groups.

GARY HART
Monday, July 12, 7:30 p.m.

Long one of our most passionate advocates for an America guided by its highest democratic ideals, former Colorado senator GARY HART demonstrates in The Fourth Power (Oxford, $22.00) the link between a principled foreign policy and national security in the age of terror. "Who we are gives us our strength," he argues, and convincingly argues that when U.S. actions on the world stage are inconsistent with established democratic values, America is made more vulnerable.

ARI ARMSTRONG, DAVID KOPEL & MICHAEL HUEMER
Tuesday, July 13, 7:30 p.m.

Today's war on drugs funds terrorists, undermines justice, corrupts business, and destroys people's lives, argue the contributors to Sheriff Bill Masters' new book, The New Prohibition: Voices of Dissent Challenge the Drug War (Accurate, $14.95), including ARI ARMSTRONG, DAVID KOPEL & MICHAEL HUEMER. Masters brings together essays from peace officers, public officials, scholars, and policy experts that analyze the many harms of modern drug prohibition.

BRUCE SCHOENFELD
Wednesday, July 14, 7:30 p.m.

Althea Gibson first met Angela Buxton at an exhibition match in India. On the surface, the two women could not have been more different. But both women encountered prejudice, particularly on the tennis circuit, where they were excluded from tournaments and clubs because of race and religion. In The Match (Amistad, $24.95), BRUCE SCHOENFELD delivers not only the little-known history of Gibson's life but also the story of two underdogs who refused to let bigotry stop them.

The book teaches all of us how we can overcome religious intolerance, treat women and men equally, preserve our environment, and live in peace.

GORDON WICKSTROM
Tuesday, July 27, 7:30 p.m.

Fishing is a pursuit for which writers had an affinity even before Izaak Walton; still, it is Walton's spirit that hovers over this collection of musings by well-known writer and fisherman GORDON WICKSTROM. In Late in an Angler's Life (University of New Mexico, $19.95), Wickstrom writes about all the things that matter to people who love to fish, and those people will be grateful to him for having produced a book they can read with real pleasure when not fishing.
